  AESA Summer 2010 CEO Conference 

Reaching the Top with ESAs in the Driver's Seat

This year’s AESA Foundation Summer CEO Conference provided an opportunity for superintendents/ceos and leadership teams from ESAs across the nation to interact with their peers as they plan for the future. Among the speakers was John White, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Rural Outreach. Other sessions included “ESAs Working with SDEs and LEAs” with Iowa Director of Education Judy Jeffrey, an ESA panel on how ESAs are using Race to the Top and i3 proposals including facilitated work on developing a document to guide ESAs in proposal preparation for the next round of competitions, and leader to-leader sessions.

Attendees participated  in important discussions on
Race to the Top / ESEA issues:

* Recruiting, preparing and developing effective principals and teachers

* Moving from expectations of "quality" to "effectiveness" for both teachers and principals

* Rewarding and retaining effective principals and teachers

* Serious high school reform, including online learning and its impact on when, where and how learning takes place, as well as how that learning is assessed

* Addressing national standards and assessments that are internationally benchmarked

* Using longitudinal data, not just for reporting, but to inform instruction at the building and classroom level
