Written by Noelle Ellerson Ng, Associate Executive Director for Advocacy & Governance

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released new cybersecurity resources to help schools strengthen their defenses.

To support the work, CISA has released K-12 Cybersecurity Foundations Resource Package, designed specifically for schools and districts. The collection includes guides, videos, and supplemental materials that provide cost-effective, actionable steps for preventing, mitigating, and responding to cyber threats. The resource package includes materials tailored for multiple audiences, from superintendents and district leaders to technology teams and school staff. Resources include:
  • Getting Started Guide for district leaders and non-technical staff
  • An Implementation Guide for IT and cybersecurity professionals
  • A six-part video series
  • Quick-reference materials and supporting resources
The guides focus on eight foundational cybersecurity objectives, including protecting login credentials, safeguarding devices and assets, testing backups, strengthening incident response capabilities, improving cybersecurity training, managing sensitive data appropriately, aligning investments with recognized cybersecurity frameworks, and developing long-term cybersecurity plans.
For district leaders looking to build resilience, improve preparedness, and better protect students and staff, these resources provide a practical roadmap for strengthening cybersecurity efforts at every stage. Districts can access the full K-12 Cybersecurity Foundations Resource Package through CISA's website: https://www.cisa.gov/k-12-cybersecurity-foundations
