I wanted to take a moment to share an incredible opportunity Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) had this week with the U.S. Department of Education. During a roundtable with our many partners, we tackled some of the most pressing challenges facing schools across Michigan, including mental health, special education, and ongoing funding issues. I made sure to highlight the remarkable leadership and services our ISD/RESAs provide to schools across the state (see note below). Most importantly, I emphasized our willingness to lead and serve in any initiative aimed at improving education for all children in Michigan.
As part of the conversation, I also stressed the critical importance of teacher retention and recruitment, spotlighting the outstanding work of Talent Together (in this area) and our national association, AESA, for their national advocacy, leadership, and networking to address the many complex challenges that need systemic change. All of this is in recognition of the many skills and talents of our membership and our national association.
Lastly, it was a great opportunity to showcase what we’ve accomplished and, more importantly, to position ISD/RESAs as key partners ready to take on even greater roles in supporting our schools. While we have much to be proud of as we start the new year, we must remain proactive. We must continue sharing our story, leading with strength, and always serving with our hearts.
We are Better Together,
John Severson

Notes from the U.S. Department of Education Meeting
We at MAISA thank MDE for this opportunity to celebrate the work of ISD/RESAs and share successes and challenges across our state with the U.S. Department of Education. I am incredibly proud of the work our members do.
Better Together: Ensuring Success for Every Student
At ISDs and RESAs, we believe that all students thrive when we work together. Through our collaborative efforts, we are committed to providing the resources, training, and support that students and educators need to succeed.
Teaching and Learning: ISDs offer thousands of professional learning sessions each year, empowering educators with the latest research and innovative teaching methods. This ensures that teachers can continuously improve and deliver high-quality education to all students.
Specialized Student Services: We support local school districts in meeting a wide range of specialized needs, from Early Childhood (0-5) and Parent Education to Special Education, Career and Technical Education, Early/Middle College, and services for Court-Involved Youth and Homeless Education. Our programs extend across Early Literacy, Mathematics, and talent development, ensuring that no student is left behind.
Shared Operational Services: ISDs help districts operate more efficiently by sharing services in key areas like technology, transportation, business, and teacher training. By doing so, we enhance quality and reduce costs, enabling districts to focus more resources on student success.
Developing Partnerships: ISDs play a critical role in local economic development by building strong partnerships with colleges, universities, businesses, industries, and human service agencies. These relationships create pathways for student success both in school and beyond.
At ISDs, we are truly Better Together—working hand in hand with educators, communities, and families to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
